Description

The Church in Mission Unit is seeking individuals to fill the role of Leadership Animator as part of the Canada Summer Jobs Program for 2024. This is an 8-week program at 35 hours per week.  The Leadership Animators' time will begin on July 2, 2024 with summer employment that includes training, leadership development, education, living in community, and event planning.

The Leadership Animator will be employed for an 8-week term in the summer of 2024. Their work will include liaising with a regional office and/or a local congregation, online and in-person team meetings, attendance at an in-person leadership development program (travel within Canada may be required), and event planning. The Animators will, at times, work remotely and will need capacity for online communication and learning. Supervision for the position(s) will be carried out by staff of the General Council Office. Leadership Animators must qualify for a Canada Summer Jobs Grant, and be within the age range of 15-21 years..

There are three main goals for the Leadership Animator Program:

  1. Leadership development
  2. Vocational discernment
  3. Event planning for both Youth Forum at GC45 (to be held in 2025) and local Centennial Commemorations in conjunction with local communities of faith

Activities and Responsibilities:

  • Animators will be responsible for submitting all employment paperwork and reading any necessary training materials at the beginning of their employment;
  • Animators will connect with other young people across the church who are engaging in leadership and event planning and work together to plan Youth Forum at GC45;
  • Animators will gain skills in community engagement, team building, program and event planning;
  • Animators will develop relationships with local communities of faith and assist in planning and leading 100th anniversary celebrations of The United Church of Canada;
  • Animators will attend online training and program planning throughout the summer, as well as  planning and providing programs in local settings
  • Animators will learn about the polity, ministry, and history of the United Church in their local context as well as in the national context and will work with their cohort to develop the program and schedule for Youth Forum at GC45;
  • Animators will communicate their events and plans to others in the church, particularly in their regions.
  • At the end of the program, Motivators  will participate in a debrief that will include:
  1. A full review of the summer – all activities, projects, and decisions made;
  2. Affirmation of work done, learnings made, and courage shown;
  3. Feedback on the continuation of the position and program for future.

Motivators are encouraged to provide insight, expertise and mentoring of future programs.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must:

  • Be between the ages of 15-21 & eligible for work in Canada
  • Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
  • Have a sponsoring community of faith and mentor
  • Have a government-issued ID acceptable for travel documentation
  • Be passionate about climate activism and care of Creation

Compensation

Salary will be at $21.13 per hour plus 4% vacation pay.
