Ecumenical Young Adult Learning Community

The United Church of Canada invites United Church Young Adults (ages 18-25) interested in engaging ecumenically to apply to be part of the Youth and Young Adult Learning Community in conjunction with Audacious Hope (Rendezvous 2024) June 29 to July 7, 2024 in St. Catharines, ON.  This Learning Community is jointly hosted by The United Church of Canada and the Presbyterian Church of Canada, and will be comprised of  eight Canadian young adults (4 UCCan and 4 PCC)  and young adults from UCC partner Presbyterian Church in the Republic of Korea (PROK) and PCC partners Presbyterian Church of Taiwan (PCTaiwan) and the Korean Christian Church in Japan (KCCJ).

Join us to make visible global partnership and bring awareness to shared justice concerns through domestic and global lenses.

The Ecumenical Learning Community will share cultural and church contexts and commitments to faith and justice, and jointly develop a workshop for Audacious Hope, The United Church of Canada and Presbyterian Church of Canada’s joint national youth and young adult gathering. 

The Learning Community will gather from June 29-July 3 to create community, share gifts and wisdom from unique contexts throughout Canada, South Korea, Taiwan and Japan and jointly develop a workshop to lead at Audacious Hope, along with fully participating in the full Audacious Hope event (July 3-7). The Learning Community will stay at Brock University in St Catharine’s, Ontario. 

Cost
The United Church of Canada will cover all travel, accommodation, program and food costs, including registration for Audacious Hope.  

Applicant Profile

The selected young adults will participate in experiences that: 

  • Are offered in English (no translation will be available)
  • Include young adults from globally diverse backgrounds
  • Engage youth and young adults in social justice ministries 

The selected young adults should have an openness to: 

  • Working in a context with diverse sexual orientation and all genders
  • Understanding and analysis of social justice issues and social action experiences they can share with global and Canadian peers
  • Leading worship, faithful reflection and bible study
  • Living simply in shared accommodations at a University and/or local hotels
  • Commitment as host country to co-create community of support and encouragement within the broader community of Audacious Hope, e.g. commitment to this global learning community being primary community and home group within Audacious Hope experience. 
  • Previous experience of RendezVous (an asset)
  • Ability to communicate in Japanese and/or Korean (an asset)
  • Have a demonstrated commitment to, and engagement in, The United Church of Canada (locally, regionally and/or nationally) 

As well, in selecting the four UCCan participants, we wish to form a group that:

  • is representative of the diversity in all its expressions in our church,
  • includes young adults with a variety of justice engagements,
  • includes some people who have previously attended RendezVous 

Outcomes

  • Written piece (about 400 words) summarizing the experience and/or social media presence during the event 
  • Speaking engagements to UCC communities of faith about the experience
