Chinook Winds Region, as part of the United Church of Canada (UCC), works in partnership with local communities of faith (92 throughout the Region), as well as the General Council Office, to serve God’s mission in Jesus Christ, empowered by the Spirit, for a world of justice, peace, reconciliation and the integrity of creation.

Chinook Winds Region is seeking an individual to fill the role of Hospital Ministry Coordinator for a one-year term, possibility of renewal if needed, with the goal of having Alberta Health Services (AHS) approved Hospital Ministry in all Acute Care Hospitals in the region by 2022.  This is a part-time one-year term position, 40 hours per month.

The Hospital Ministry Coordinator will be the Spiritual Care voice fully and knowledgably representing the UCC Religious Community Visitors (Visitors) and the UCC at Alberta Health Services, Spiritual Care Advisory Committee (SCAC) meetings (currently in Calgary Zone and, eventually, with the equivalent committee(s) for other Acute Care Hospitals within the region that have a Hospital Ministry). They will attend meetings, if needed, of the Chinook Winds Region Lay Ministry Working Group of Pastoral Relations.

They will be a Visitor, at least temporarily, to experience what the role entails, to fill in where needed to over gaps in coverage, and to comply with AHS on-call requests.

This position is responsible for the Visitors, including ensuring that:

  • Visitors receive 20 hr. CWR Recommended Spiritual Care Education
  • Visitors follow the AHS protocol
  • Visitors & Coordinator continue to upgrade their education every year to stay current, partly through programs offered through AHS, or any relevant opportunity

The Hospital Ministry Coordinator will find the appropriate ministry person for AHS On-Call emergencies needing a UCC presence, or doing it themselves, in Calgary Acute Care Hospitals.

They support visitors in rough times and provide informal appreciation for the hours of volunteering Spiritual Care to the hundreds of patients that identify as belonging to the UCC, most without a church home. They’ll work with the Regional Lay Ministry Working Group of Pastoral Relations to offer formal appreciation to the Visitors.

The Hospital Ministry Coordinator will work with AHS Zone Leaders and a chosen UCC representative from each city in region that has an Acute Care Hospital to establish UCC Hospital Ministries. The priority is Red Deer first, Lethbridge next, and then Medicine Hat.

  • A minimum of completion of Clinical Pastoral Education or five years of experience in this area. Being an Ordained or Diaconal Minister would be an advantage.
  • A passion for Spiritual Care for those in Acute Care Hospitals, primarily seniors.

The incumbent must meet the requirements of the Alberta Health Services, including: 20 hours of Spiritual Care education or review of same; approval of CWR Pastoral Relations Minister on behalf of the United Church of Canada; current valid police and vulnerable sector check; hospital orientation; meet with the Spiritual Health Practitioner in charge; be willing to follow the protocol in place at any given time

This position works from the Coordinator’s home office. Since there are four acute hospitals in Calgary and meetings would be in Calgary, it is recommended that the Coordinator lives nearby. Some travel will be required in the Region.


Salary will be based on skills and experience, within the pro-rated annual salary of $14,678.00 or $30.38 per hour.
