After accepting current General Secretary Nora Sanders’ notice that she will retire in September 2020, the Nominations Committee put out a call to the church for a search committee. Many nominations were received.
On the recommendations of the Nominations Committee and the National Indigenous Council, the General Council Executive has appointed the following members:
- Rev. Mitchell Anderson, Living Skies Regional Council
- Rev. Samuel Dansokho, Conseil régional Nakonha:ka Regional Council
- Sybil Wilson, Horseshoe Falls Regional Council
- Rev. Hannah Lee, Shining Waters Regional Council
- Rev. Mary Royal-Duczek, Eastern Ontario Outaouais Regional Council
- Cathie Cunningham, Shining Waters Regional Council/National Indigenous Church
- John Snow, Chinook Winds Regional Council/National Indigenous Church
As well, Sharon Aylsworth, Chair of the General Secretary’s Advisory Committee, and the Right Rev. Richard Bott, Moderator, are members of the committee by virtue of their current positions. The Moderator chairs the Search Committee. Short biographies of each member are available in the download below.
The General Secretary Search Committee began its work in January and will recommend a candidate to the Executive in late spring. The committee is responsible for the integrity and fairness of the search and selection process, and will make the current needs and future directions of the church its priorities.
The Search Committee has also engaged the services of an executive search firm, Amrop Knightsbridge, for assistance. The committee’s first task is to clarify the General Secretary’s role and related expectations so it can write a clear position description. To do this, the committee will invite input from key leaders across the denomination. The description will be posted in late February, and applications will be received throughout March and April. This is an open search, as it is for any senior position in the church. Further updates on the process and timelines will be provided as available.
The Moderator writes,
As I have worked beside Nora over the past year and a half, I have become even more thankful for the gifts that were brought to the denomination when she was called to ministry in the role of the General Secretary. I am excited about the work we have of seeking out the best candidate and making a recommendation to the General Council Executive. I am also very happy that we have such a capable group coming together to do just that. I am certain that with prayer, love, and open, honest, and clear communication with one another, we will do this task well.
