Individuals and groups are using AVEL resources in a variety of ways.
- Previewing idea
- Depending on availability of video titles, one minister took samples from several series and gave them to several small groups to preview. The small groups came together to comment on the videos they had previewed and selection decisions were made by the whole group, about what video to use for their bible study.
- Using video with children
- For Advent, Beth McLean in Hartney, Manitoba, did a study for children after school on Tuesdays for an hour. They watched videos and someone did crafts with them. The children liked the videos and they were a big help with the program.
- Ecumenical study groups
- Ecumenical study groups are using AVEL resources to generate discussion, particularly the faith development series such asFaces on Faith, Questions of Faith, Six Leaders of Contemporary Christian Thoughtand many others. Invite another bible study group from a local church of another denomination to join your group for a study using AVEL videos.
- An example from Sue Obee at AVEL West:
I had a request for videos (study of Jesus) for a joint Anglican and United Church study. They will offer the study in the afternoon (at one church) and in the evening (at the other church).
- Other Group Use
- One minister in a small rural congregation used a video series for a few weeks during "sermon time". She was taking the Sunday School classes so the teachers could be in worship. Other small congregations use videos when the minister is away.
- Videos are played at some churches during coffee time after Sunday worship -- especially Mission and Service stories.
- Some United Church members will borrow for use in schools or other groups.
- An example from Sue Obee at AVEL West:
One high school teacher was amazed at the AVEL collection and used several titles from the residential schools resources for his classes. I have had a Catholic Girls School taking out a membership for years.
- Personal study
- Videos and DVDs are used for personal study and meditation.
- Collection of clips from several resources
- Clips from several resources shown for a study theme or to promote a study or mission theme-"you don't have to show the whole thing."
- Studies designed around a theme or book
- Programs can be designed to include an assortment of resources, books, videos, or DVDs all around the same theme. Or to supplement study of a book, like Anne Martin's Exploring Faith Questions. Your local AVEL Consultant can help with ideas and suggestions.
- Get others involved in selecting videos and DVDs
-
- Host a "preview party" to consider resources for an upcoming event or workshop.
- Circulate some AVEL resources for previewing and then come together to discuss and to make plans.
