I Am Listening: Daily Devotions for Lent
Edited by Betty Lynn Schwab
Voices from a surprising range of ages and backgrounds (Canadian Forces chaplains, UCW members, youth, ministers) are united in a common theme in I Am Listening. Although the contributors' reflections are based on scripture passages that span the Bible and life experiences that criss-cross the globe, each devotion calls readers to listen with their hearts and to hear the voice of God in their listening.
The Lenten devotional includes guidelines for weekly small-group conversations plus a series of end-of-week Four-Strand Garland spiritual practice guides for individual readers.
The power of this year's Lenten study is that the stories encourage us to examine our own experiences in the light of Lent's journey. We are encouraged to "listen" to our own hearts, pondering the lessons of our lives in the context of faith. Because the stories offered in the study come from such a variety of people and experiences, each of us will find many points of contact in our own experience…. As we do this, we find common threads of encouragement and hope amidst the stark realities of our personal and collective life.

This resource is exactly what many in our congregations have been longing for... simple, usable, but profound tools for spiritual deepening. Its focus on listening for God in the midst of the very real and very diverse human experience allows each reader to notice and to pay attention to the One who is longing to find home in our hearts.
I would use this resource for my personal journey this Lent. It also has rich possibilities for groups as well. Wouldn't it be wonderful if during Lent, all of our boards, councils, committees, and church leaders engaged in using this resource for listening deeply, for opening the heart to where God is nudging through scripture, through the reflections, and through the deepening questions offered in this resource.
