Church Seasons and Special Sundays

International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia

The International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia take place around the world on May 17. Affirm United calls upon all affirming congregations of the United Church, and their community allies, to organize a special worship for this occasion to take place on the third Sunday of May.

This day is meant to emphasize that homophobia and transphobia are shameful and that instead, we must work for inclusion, tolerance, and peace for all people. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans members of our communities still face the reality of homophobia and transphobia in their daily lives. Gay and trans bashing is still a frequent occurrence. Trans people have yet to win specific recognition in human rights law. They face overt discrimination in the workplace and society. Their right to access necessary medical procedures is precarious at best.

This is an opportunity for all affirming congregations to renew their commitment to the LGBT community, and to make anew the welcoming message of the gospel (Matt 5:14-16). Together, let us say “yes” to God, and let us be the light of the world.

We encourage you to speak to your church session, community partners, family, and friends in preparation of this special day for your congregation.  Let us reaffirm to all who are oppressed, “You are not alone.”

A special liturgy and prayers to be used will be posted on the Affirm United site.
