Pakistan Flooding: How United Church Members Can Help

There are many ways to participate in the United Church's current appeal to work with the people of Pakistan in the current crisis.

  • Pray: Hold the people of Pakistan and their families around the world in prayer. See our Worship page for links to sites with prayers and worship resources.
  • Donate: Designate a gift for "Pakistan Flood Relief" to be used by United Church partner organizations in response to the crisis. See “Details on How to Donate" below to learn how to donate and about potential government matching.

Details on How to Donate

The process for donating to The United Church of Canada’s (the United Church) Pakistan Floods Relief Fund follows guidelines outlined by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).

Option 1: Through your Local Church

Send your designated gift to your local church; your church will issue your income tax receipt.

To qualify for the government matching program

  1. your church must receive your cheque on or before Sunday, October 3, 2010.
  2. your church must send one cheque to General Council Office, payable to The United Church of Canada and marked "Pakistan Flood Relief Fund," for the entire amount of funds collected between August 2, 2010 and October 3, 2010. CIDA requires that a list of donors with names, addresses, and amounts be attached. This information needs to arrive at the General Council Office by October 13, 2010 to meet CIDA's reporting deadline.

Option 2: Directly Through the General Council Office

Send your designated gift to the General Council Office at the address below, or donate online (select “Emergency Response” and specify “Pakistan Relief”). Cheques should be made payable to The United Church of Canada and marked "Pakistan Flood Relief Fund." All donations must reach the General Council Office by October 3 to qualify for the government matching program.

Donations made by United Church members, congregations, and pastoral charges to the Pakistan Floods Relief Fund are considered "over and above" gifts to the United Church's wider work, so they are not recorded as part of a congregation/pastoral charge's Mission and Service Fund giving.

As part of The United Church's Emergency Response Fund, 85 percent of your donation will directly fund an emergency response in Pakistan. Fifteen percent will be used to support emergencies that do not receive intense media cover and response. No administration fees will be deducted from your donation.
