Organization and Governance


The United Church is Canada's largest Protestant denomination, with over 2 million Canadians who, when asked by Statistics Canada in 2011, identified their religion as United Church.

The United Church was formed in 1925 through the union of Canadian Methodists, Congregationalists, Local Union Churches, and 70% of Canadian Presbyterians.

As of December 31, 2013, the United Church is organized into

  • 13 regional Conferences
  • 86 district presbyteries
  • 2,172 local pastoral charges
  • 3,016 individual congregations

The United Church has

  • 3,608 ordained ministers: 2,296 men/1,312 women
  • 297 diaconal ministers: 21 men/276 women
  • 218 designated lay ministers (under appointment)
