Organization and Governance


The United Church is Canada's largest Protestant denomination, with over 2 million Canadians who, when asked by Statistics Canada in 2011, identified their religion as United Church.

The United Church was formed in 1925 through the union of Canadian Methodists, Congregationalists, and 70% of Canadian Presbyterians.

As of December 31, 2012, the United Church is organized into

  • 13 regional Conferences
  • 85 district presbyteries
  • 2,182 local pastoral charges
  • 3,075 individual congregations

The United Church has

  • 3,651 ordained ministers: 2,339 men/1,312 women
  • 293 diaconal ministers: 21 men/272 women
  • 226 designated lay ministers (under appointment): 70 men/156 women
