Description

The People in Partnership program enables United Church people and global partners to encounter each other, accompany each other in God’s mission, and learn more about each other’s contexts. The program provides a framework for the exchange of people (from Canada to global partners, and from global partners to Canada).

This position is a cross-cultural embodiment of the mission relationship between The United Church of Canada and two global partner organizations, the Presbyterian Church in the Republic of Korea (PROK) and the National Council of Churches in Korea (NCCK). The primary appointment is to the PROK. The candidate will be appointed to serve both the PROK and the NCCK, assigned to the PROK General Assembly office in Seoul.

The successful applicant will work three days a week in PROK’s Ecumenical Relations Department, and two days a week in NCCK’s International Department. This staff person will work in a close, collaborative way with other members of the staff of both organizations. Primary responsibilities include coordination of English language communications for the PROK and NCCK (including writing and editing of written correspondence, articles, public statements, social media, and Web postings), assisting in the coordination of global partner visits to the PROK and NCCK, relating to other diverse ecumenical co-workers assigned to the PROK and NCCK, and a variety of other program and administrative involvements. The incumbent must have a willingness to learn and accompany the mission and ministry of the PROK and NCCK.

Qualifications

  • Active commitment to, and articulation of, the gospel of Jesus Christ and participation in a Christian church, with solid knowledge of the mission and ministry of The United Church of Canada, its partnership in mission policy and practice, and support of the ecumenical movement;
  • Passion for justice, and a deep commitment to learn of the needs and aspirations of Koreans, as articulated by the PROK and NCCK;
  • Excellent English language verbal, written, and electronic communication and networking skills. Ability to read, analyse, and interpret large amounts of complex information; 
  • Ability to exercise self-awareness, sensitivity, and compassion often working within areas of cultural difference. Personal integrity, maturity, and respect for others essential;
  • Lived cross-cultural experience an asset, preferably in church or church-related work;
  • Language skills in addition to English a strong asset;
  • Intellectual discipline and alertness. Good physical condition, mental and emotional stability and maturity; good self-esteem; in touch with one’s own needs, strengths, and limitations;
  • Willingness and ability to move to Seoul, Korea, and to work under the direction of the partners; ability to live a simple lifestyle; and
  • May be an ordained or diaconal minister, or a lay person. If the latter, some previous theological training would be considered an asset.

This position works from the PROK General Assembly office in Seoul under normal office working conditions. Attendance at occasional evening and weekend meetings is required. The appointment will include a home assignment at the midway mark.

All appointments are subject to the following conditions:

  • a positive recommendation for overseas service from the Church in Mission Unit’s medical consultant based on a thorough medical examination, and approval of application for insurance from the overseas medical insurance carrier;
  • a satisfactory outcome from a police records check through the Canadian Police Information Centre via the RCMP; and
  • global partner approval
Compensation

This is considered a Co-worker in Mission position. Compensation is an annual base “stipend” intended to reflect a living allowance rather than a market-based salary and as such takes into account cost of living and housing. The annual stipend and allowances are divided into equal monthly payments. All Co-workers in Mission are members of the United Church’s group insurance (extended health benefits), long-term disability, and pension plans.
