The extraordinarily generous people of the United Church have donated $1 million to the Emergency Appeal in response to the Syrian refugee crisis.

In addition to giving to the Emergency Appeal and Mission & Service partners in the Middle East, the generosity of United Church people continues in communities across Canada. To date, United Church congregations and groups have raised or pledged $8 million and committed to more than 900 refugee sponsorship applications. The Sponsorship Agreement Holder program is managed by Mission & Service funded staff who are coordinating this massive, historic response.

“Refugees fleeing unimaginable violence in Syria encounter a very different life in the refugee camps in neighbouring countries,” said Wendy Gichuru, Regional Program Coordinator for Africa and the Middle East. “Their situation is dire and funds raised for the Syria Appeal are providing desperately needed food, clothes, medicine, shelter and psychosocial support,” she added.

The United Church is sharing the funds raised with ACT Alliance and the Middle East Council of Churches, both of which are providing continuous support to displaced Syrians and host communities.

“We are grateful to faithful United Church people for responding to the urgent needs of Syrians,” said Gichuru.
