This compassionate and generous response from the church is a faithful expression of God’s call to love and care for others. United Church of Canada gifts totalling $500,000 were eligible to be matched by the Government of Canada for relief efforts in the region.
The amount of $348,748 has been sent to the regions to be used in South Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Nigeria to Mission & Service partners ACT Alliance, The National Council of Churches in Kenya, and the Organization of African Instituted Churches. Further funding will be sent this fall as the international community, including The United Church of Canada and global partners, continue to respond to the dire situations still facing the people of South Sudan, Somalia, Nigeria, Yemen, and Kenya. Ongoing relief efforts and the wide displacement of people remain hampered by conflict and extreme weather patterns including drought in some areas and flooding in others.
The need remains urgent. The United Church continues to invite contributions to the Extreme Hunger Appeal to support ongoing efforts in the region.
In some areas there are signs of hope. Mission & Service partner ACT Alliance, supported in part by contributions from The United Church of Canada, reports on efforts to respond to the basic needs of hunger and water in South Sudan:
- ACT Alliance responds to hunger throughout war-torn South Sudan
- “We have safe water now”
- “There is nothing to keep us alive”
Through United Church membership in the Canadian Foodgrains Bank we have also been able to support food assistance programs in Somalia and South Sudan. Resources for congregations, including a slide for projection and bulletin insert, are available on the Extreme Hunger Appeal page (scroll to the bottom).
