Grateful appreciation is extended to everyone who has supported a response to the Syrian refugee crisis through The United Church of Canada. People of the United Church, collaborating with others in their communities, have submitted more than 900 applications for sponsorship of Syrian refugees, raising or pledging over $8 million. In addition, over $1 million has been raised to help displaced people within Syria, as well as those who fled to Lebanon and Jordan through the Syria Refugee Appeal launched in 2013.
As the situation shifts in Syria, the United Church is closing the Syria Refugee Appeal while partners and international aid organizations evaluate relief efforts to date and assess next steps. Your ongoing gifts to the Mission & Service of the United Church enable us to respond to emergencies as they unfold.
Your gifts to the Syria Refugee Appeal have helped meet the basic needs of thousands of refugees and internally displaced people with food supplies, water, sanitation, and shelter. Winter clothing has also been provided to many.
As major hostilities within Syria wind down in some areas, it is hoped many of those displaced to Lebanon and Jordan will be able to return to some of the more stable areas. However, even as some displaced from their homes begin the cautious journey back, communities will face many years of re-building of both trust and infrastructure.
Please continue to hold the people of Syria in your prayers, and pray for peace and stability in the region.
