Responding to the gospel command to feed the hungry, welcome strangers, take care of the sick, and visit the imprisoned, the United Church—together with other Canadian churches and church agencies—is deeply concerned about the plight of Palestinian refugees.
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) provides assistance, protection, and humanitarian services for about five million Palestinian refugees in the Near East. Canada’s funding for UNRWA was terminated in 2009; it is hoped that this urgently needed contribution will be restored.
A joint letter to the Hon. Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister for International Development and La Francophonie, urges the government to restore and increase Canada’s urgently needed contribution to UNRWA. Moderator Jordan Cantwell signed on behalf of the United Church. Other signatories represent The Anglican Church of Canada, the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, Canadian Quakers, Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada, Mennonite Central Committee Canada, and The Presbyterian Church in Canada.
