Canadian churches and church agencies recently expressed their spiritual concern for Palestinian refugees, urging the Canadian government to restore its funding to The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). UNRWA has supported education, health care, relief, and emergency assistance for four generations of vulnerable Palestinians.
The government announced that it would restore Canadian UNRWA funding, pledging $25 million annually. In a November 25 ecumenical letter, Canadian church leaders expressed their appreciation to the Hon. Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister for International Development and La Francophonie, while continuing to lift up the urgent call from partners in the region for initiatives that support peace with justice between Palestine and Israel.
Moderator Jordan Cantwell signed on behalf of the United Church. Other signatories represent The Anglican Church of Canada, the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, Canadian Quakers, Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada, Mennonite Central Committee Canada, and The Presbyterian Church in Canada.
