The United Church of Canada/L'Église Unie du CanadaThe Archives preserves the historical records of The United Church of Canada and its antecedent denominations, and selected personal papers of individuals associated with the United Church and its antecedent denominations. Such papers provide unique and valuable information, and may include correspondence, diaries, speeches, lectures, sermons, and personal registers.
For detailed guidelines on maintaining church records, and the "what, when, and how" of donating them to the Archives, please see Resources for Congregations and Conference Archives.
The Church Session should recommend to the Official Board that the records be deposited with the United Church Archives. The minutes of both the Session and Official Board should include a list of the records deposited. A list of the records being deposited with the Central Archives should also be included with the records.
When possible, the records should be brought to the Archives in person. If this is not possible, they can be sent by courier or by registered mail. It is important to package records carefully when shipping them to the Archives.
Please contact the Archives before bringing/shipping the records, so that the Archives staff are aware of the incoming records.
If you would like to donate personal papers to the Archives, including women’s records, Archives staff welcome an opportunity to discuss this in advance. Please send a detailed e-mail or letter outlining the scope and content of the records, and staff will contact you directly to discuss if your records fit our acquisition mandate, and what the next steps might be.
