The following is a listing of closed captioned videos available from AVEL. Most of these titles are available at all AVEL outlets. However, those titles marked with an asterisk (*) are available only at the specified outlets.

Before Columbus (series)
This is a series of three videos which describe the Native experience in the Americas during the past five hundred years. Each video is about 50 minutes and is divided into two segments for study purposes.
Burning Times (* Winnipeg, Mountain West, and Grand River outlets)
Part of the women and spirituality trilogy which also includes Goddess Remembered and Full Circle. Explores a phenomenon that until recently, has remained unexamined — the great witch craze that swept through Europe, and a few centuries ago and led to massive torture. (56 minutes)
Cinderella and Me (VHS)
A story enacted using puppets and real people helps children learn to solve difficult situations. In this story classmates decide that Audrey can't play the part of Cinderella because she doesn't "look" the part. (14 minutes)
Company of Strangers (VHS)
A story about the relationships of eight elderly women stranded when their bus breaks down. Helps break down stereotypes about the elderly. (1 hour 41 minutes)
Crown Prince (* Winnipeg outlet only)
A thought-provoking drama, this video explores the complex problems teenagers face in dealing with domestic violence and how a young man reacts "just like dad." (37minutes)
Don't Take My Sunshine Away (* Winnipeg outlet only)
Shows stories of care giving in Sweden, Denmark, England, Canada and the USA. (59 minutes)
Escape from Affluenza (VHS)
The sequel to Affluenza. Offers examples of lifestyle changes that cut consumption, debt and waste and save the environment, while saving money. (56 minutes)
Full Circle (* Winnipeg outlet only)
Is the third and final film of the women and spirituality trilogy which also includes Goddess Remembered and Burning Times. It is a look at the many manifestations of women's spirituality in the western world in the last decade of the 20th century. (56 minutes)
Genesis: A Living Conversation (series) (* Winnipeg, Mountain West, and Grand River outlets)
This is a 10-part video series of Bill Moyers in conversation with well-known theologians, writers and artists. There are five videos with two segments of 55 minutes each.

Part of the women and spirituality trilogy which also includes Burning Times and Full Circle. This documentary about the roots of contemporary women's spirituality is a salute to the earliest ancestors of the Western civilization and the goddess-worshiping religions they fostered. (55 minutes)

Profiles contemporary Canadian Native women who are on the front lines in the fight for survival of their people. (55 minutes)
Living With Dying (* Winnipeg and Mountain West outlets)
Palliative home care, family, neighbours, and friends offer support in order for a terminally ill man to remain at home where he wants to be. (27 minutes)

In this two-volume video series, the political life and ideas of the controversial author, linguist and radical philosopher, Noam Chomsky are explored.

This video has two parts, about 20 minutes each. Part one highlights the relationship between the youth interviewed and their families. The second part of the video focuses more on what it is like to be lesbian or gay in our society. (90 minutes)
Pills Unlimited (* Winnipeg outlet only)
A young student and her grandmother become aware of the problems of excessive use of medication by many seniors and explore some of the alternatives which may be considered. (29 minutes)
Playing Fair (series)
This is a series of 4 videos to provide discussion starters about racism, respect and equality, for children 6 to 12 years. (14 minutes each)
Red Boots for Christmas (VHS)
Hans, the shoemaker, learns about the joys of sharing and fellowship of Christmas after he is visited by an angel. (30 minutes)
Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes (* Winnipeg outlet only)
This is the story of Sadako Sasaki, a young Japanese girl from Hiroshima who developed leukemia from the atomic bomb. Sadako began folding a thousand paper cranes in hopes that she would be well again. (30 minutes)
Sandra's Garden (* Winnipeg outlet only)
The story of how one woman found the courage to speak the truth about incest and in doing so began a journey to overcome the fear, guilt and denial that had shaped her life. (34 minutes)
Searching for Spirituality (series)
Joan Chittisler, Benedictine nun, teacher, author, sociologist leads six other seekers on the search for wholeness. They explore ten attributes that form a Christian spiritual life. Five programs on two tapes. (25 minutes each)
The Simple Way (series)
This series of 6 videos is hosted by Fred Penner. It is about voluntary simplicity - a movement which encourages frugality and spiritual fulfillment. Each video is 25 minutes.

Ten-year old Tammy takes us back in time to the first Christmas and the retelling of the Christmas story by David, a stableboy in Bethlehem. Shows that the sharing of gifts is not just a Christmas tradition but a way of sharing God's love. (27 minutes)
Sticks and Stones: Name Calling (VHS)
This program is designed to help children develop positive problem solving skills. School children, played by puppets, are aided by a teacher or friend to help them resolve difficult situations. (14 minutes)
Taking Stock (VHS)
Examines the history of the Atlantic Cod Fishing crisis and concludes that there are ecological limits which must not be passed in the quest for economic gain. (48 minutes)
Talking about God (series)
Contemporary Christian and Jewish people of faith were asked to respond to a series of questions about God. A 7-part series (approximately 25 minutes each).
Talking about Sex: A Guide for Families (VHS)
This kit includes a video which discusses issues of puberty and sexuality from both the parents' and the students' perspectives. It addresses difficult to discuss questions specific to changes in girls and boys. Included in the kit is a guide for parents/teachers/leaders and a booklet for participants. (Grades 5-9) (30 minutes)
Teens against Violence (series)
A 2-part series about teens thinking about the impact of violence in the media on their lives as well as sexual harassment, homophobia, racism and urban violence.
Thinking Positive (VHS)
Designed for teenagers in rural areas, to provoke discussions about the risk of contracting HIV/AIDS. Filmed in a small community in Newfoundland, this video is relevant to the experiences of teenagers everywhere. (24 minutes)
Turbulence (* Winnipeg outlet only)
Why are the rich becoming richer and the poor poorer? This video is a discussion of the current economic conditions and the unprecedented power of financial markets. (52 minutes)
Turning Down the Heat: The New Energy Revolution (VHS)
This video, narrated by David Suzuki, is subtitled, "The New Energy Revolution". It looks at the crisis of global warming and offers ideas for renewable energy and energy conservation as economically viable solutions to climate change. (49 minutes)
Uranium (VHS)
This video clearly presents the stance that uranium mining constitutes a serious threat to the environment, the health of Native people and the uranium miners. (48 minutes)
When the Day Comes (VHS)
Presents four women care givers, each doing her best to tend to an elderly loved one. (29 minutes)
Who Gets In? (VHS)
Documentary shot in Canada, Africa and Hong Kong provides the answer to who gets into Canada and raises issues about the nature of Canadian immigration policy. (52 minutes)
Who's Counting? Marilyn Waring On Sex, Lies and Global Economy (VHS)
Marilyn Waring, world-renowned political economist and author, demystifies the language of economics with vigor, clarity, and humour, mapping out an alternative economic vision that would change the way we live on our planet. (94 minutes)
