Human Rights

Social justice is based on right relations, and these relations must be rooted in respect for individuals and their communities. Work for human rights, then, is a key aspect of The United Church of Canada’s work for justice.

Together with our partners around the world, we understand human rights not only in terms of defending the inherent dignity of each person, but also as a way of expressing our mutual responsibility to care for the well-being of each person and to create and sustain healthy communities. While most nations around the world recognize the need to protect human rights and international standards have been established, the abuse of human rights continues to be a major problem—especially for people who have been marginalized by the dominant systems of power.

  • Gender justice—including respect for sexual diversity—is one of the fundamental ways we seek to transform structures and systems in order to be faithful to God's vision as revealed in the gospels.
  • The United Church recognizes the need to address racism both within the church and beyond it. We understand racism as a system of oppression that excludes some while conferring privilege on others.
  • Millions of people around the world—one in 50 persons—have been forcibly uprooted. Together with partners in Canada and around the world, the United Church works to defend the rights of refugees.
