Serving the General Council

Gifts, Skills, and Eligibility

Members serving the General Council in committees, task groups, and as representatives of the United Church come from all walks of life, all parts of the country, all professions and varying theologies. They are united in their dedication and passion to strengthen and enrich the church. They have felt a calling to serve in this way, that has been affirmed by others.

Those who serve on committees and task groups or as a representative of the United Church are

  • active participants in a local pastoral charge or ministry
  • familiar with the polity of The United Church of Canada
  • predisposed to collaboration and teamwork
  • sensitive to diversity issues
  • leaders in any court of the church
  • passionately committed to the mission of The United Church of Canada
  • willing to discern God's yearning for this work
  • possessing skills and experiences in the particular focus area of the committee

We are committed to proactively address inequities and historic patterns of exclusion. Throughout our nominations and appointment processes, we aspire to balance voices, perspectives, lived experience, and interests within each committee and among all those serving the General Council.

Each of us comes from and is shaped by a wide range of cultural contexts and identities, including our racial and ethnic background, geographic location, gender, sexual orientation, vocation and economic reality. All members are encouraged to reflect on how these gifts contribute to the perspectives and wisdom they bring to the role.

Members and adherents of The United Church of Canada are eligible to serve on its committees and task groups. Membership is a requirement to serve as a committee chair or as a representative of the United Church to another organization.

Staff members of the General Council Office and Conferences are not eligible for appointment.
