Serving the General Council

The General Council’s nomination and appointment practices are founded on the concept of spiritual call, and the understanding that the Holy Spirit moves through each of us helping us to use our God-given gifts for God’s purpose. Discerning involves paying prayerful attention to the ways in which God may be calling us, or those we know, to serve God’s purpose. There is no one way to hear a call—the Holy Spirit moves through each of us in unique ways.

You are invited to consider carefully and prayerfully the work of the church at this time, and the Current Openings. Ask: Who is God calling to lead and serve through these roles?

Do You Know Someone With the Skills and Gifts to Serve?

Throughout the scriptures, we encounter leaders being raised up through the discernment of others. If you know someone you believe may be being called to serve in a General Council role, share your discernment with them. Sharing may be especially important if the person you believe is called would not put his or her own name forward due to personal or cultural values of humility or regarding the nature of calls to leadership.

If your nominee also feels this call, he or she is asked to discern with one additional person. If this call is confirmed by these three individuals (nominator, nominee, and one additional person), please submit an expression of interest to the Nominations Committee.

The expression of interest may come directly from the nominee, or be written collaboratively between the nominator and nominee.

Is God Calling You to Share Your Gifts by Serving the General Council?

All of us are called in some way, and to each of us the Spirit has attributed gifts to serve. As you consider the work of the church at this time, ask whether God might be calling you with your gifts to lead and serve through one of these roles?

If you think that you may be being called to serve, discern this possibility with two other people who know you well. Invite them to consider prayerfully with you whether this may be a calling for you at this time; whether the church is in need of your gifts in this role. If your sense of call is confirmed by two other people, please submit an expression of interest to the Nominations Committee.
