The United Church of Canada/L'Église Unie du Canada
Kristine Greenaway is serving as the World Alliance of Reformed Churches’ (WARC) Executive Secretary for Communications. This appointment marks her return to Geneva following an earlier period when she served as the Director of Communication for the World Council of Churches. Kristine has a Masters Degree in Adult Education and a post-graduate diploma in Communication Arts. She speaks English, French, and Spanish and is an experienced television producer, scriptwriter, and editor. Kristine was born into The United Church of Canada, as her father and mother met just after her father was ordained in Vancouver and while her mother was working in Prince Rupert with the Women’s Missionary Society.
As overseas personnel, Kristine is responsible for all aspects of WARC’s communication: news releases, a newsletter, the website, publications, promotions, technology, and networking. A typical day for Kristine involves working on publications for the Uniting General Council, ensuring that journalists from the global South are there to tell the story, and sharing the vision of the organization through news stories and the design of a new website. Such a day can also include speaking to the president of their member church in Madagascar as tanks roll into the street to overthrow the country’s president, interviewing a Korean theology professor who takes students to live with nomads in Tibet and reflect on their theology in the context of a lifestyle which respects creation, and working with a Swiss radio journalist to arrange for an African participant in a mission event to record stories for broadcast.
The World Alliance of Reformed Churches is a fellowship of 75 million Reformed Christians in 214 churches in 107 countries. WARC’s purpose is to bring churches together to seek the theological clarity that will unite churches for social action and encourage joint church initiatives for economic, ecological, and gender justice. The United Church of Canada supports WARC through financial support made possible by contributions to the Mission and Service Fund as well as through the active involvement of General Council Office staff in the governance and program work of the Alliance. In 2010, WARC and the Reformed Ecumenical Council (REC) will merge to create the World Communion of Reformed Churches (WCRC). The new communion will be launched at a uniting General Council to be held in Grand Rapids, Michigan. WCRC will represent 80 million Reformed Christians around the world.
