Access to Education

The United Church has a long commitment to education. Access to education for everyone, regardless of income, is an essential part of securing greater justice, broad-based participation in society, and the eradication of poverty. The United Church, working with global partners, believes education is a basic human right and the foundation of an informed and involved society.

Current Projects

Los Quinchos—Nicaragua

Based in the capital city of Nicaragua, Managua, Centro Escolar Rodolfo Rodríguez Alvarado (Los Quinchos) provides education and skills training for children who support their families by working as street vendors. Give $1,000 to $30,000 to help the street children of Nicaragua get an education.

What Your Money Can Do
  • $1,000 supports the building of 1/10 of a classroom
  • $10,000 supports building one classroom
  • $30,000 supports building a pavilion of three classrooms

Methodist Church of Haiti

Education was the top priority of partners meeting in Haiti after the earthquake. "With schools, you build communities," church leaders said. Give $500 to $25,000 to help the children of Haiti get an education.

What Your Money Can Do
  • $500 supports a primary or secondary school student attending school for one year
  • $3,000 supports the Professional Training Centre for teachers for one year
  • $25,000 would fully support the rebuilding of a school

Karl Lévêque Cultural Institute

Project code: EMCLA3

The Karl Lévêque Cultural Institute (ICKL) is supporting rural education in Haiti, rebuilding schools, and providing infrastructure. Give $100 to $25,000 to provide children in rural Haiti with an education.

What Your Money Can Do
  • $100 supports new books and other materials for one student
  • $1,000 supports a teacher's salary for three months
  • $25,000 is enough for reconstruction of a school in a rural zone
