The United Church of Canada/L'Église Unie du CanadaIn June 2010, the Journeys of Black Peoples in The United Church of Canada gathered for the third time in Edmonton, Alberta, under the theme "The Journeys of Black Peoples: All Together in One Place." About 1/3 of the conference attendees were there for the first time.
At the 2010 National Gathering, the Journeys of Black Peoples reflected deeply on what it means to be in the same place when there are such diverse peoples—African-born, Caribbean-born, and Canadian-born—who share a common racial identity, common cultural characteristics, and yet multiple identities. It was affirmed that the Journeys is an intercultural space because of the multiple cultures represented. Participants at the 2010 National Gathering explored commonalities of historical experiences for Black peoples, the impact of the transatlantic slave trade on the African Diaspora, colonialism in Africa and the Caribbean, and structural racism in the church and society. The group also considered relationships between Black and Aboriginal communities, and heard stories of Anansi, who is an important character of West African and Caribbean folklore.
After reporting on the work that has been done since the 2007 National Gathering, the Journeys affirmed that moving forward, the Journeys will focus on strengthening the national network, sustainability for the Journeys, and leadership development.
