Exploring Faith

Transgender and Gender Identity

Transgender refers to anyone whose gender identity is different from their biological or assigned sex, and/or who expresses their gender in ways that contravene societal expectations.

The United Church  acknowledges the difference between gender identity—referring to a person’s innate, deeply felt sense of being male, female, both or neither; and sexual orientation—having to do with the gender to which one is emotionally and physically attracted. Gender identity is not a barrier to membership and ministry of The United Church of Canada.

  • Policies passed by the United Church on gender identity and the participation and ministry of transgender people.
  • Online resources on the topic of gender identity in The United Church of Canada.

International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia

Affirm United is calling upon all affirming congregations of the United Church, and their community allies, to organize a special worship for this occasion to take place on the third Sunday in May. Visit our Church Seasons and Special Sundays page for more information.

The Trans Network

This network is open to all transgender people and their allies. To become a member, contact Jordan Sullivan
