The United Church of Canada/L'Église Unie du CanadaThe United Church has a long-standing interest in issues related to food, agriculture, and fisheries. In 2008, the global rise in food prices is a particular concern. The reasons for this rise are complex, calling for responses including more equitable food distribution, sustainable farming practices, and greater public investment in small farms.
During the 1980s, considerable work was done on issues related to Plant Breeders' Rights. In 1990, the 33rd General Council affirmed a policy on sustainable agriculture and expressed concerns about over-fishing.
In November 2002, the church undertook an extensive study and consultation process on genetically modified (GM) food and biopatenting involving over 400 church members from across Canada. A detailed policy on GM foods was approved by General Council Executive in April of 2005.
