From its earliest days, The United Church of Canada has advocated and acted in favour of the social well-being of all God's people. Economic issues—how we work with others as faithful stewards to ensure the fair and sustainable sharing of God's gifts—are central to this concern.
This stewardship includes the way we organize our human activities to provide food, clothing, shelter, transportation, health, education, and cultural enrichment for all, while safeguarding the well-being of the entire community of creatures who share the Earth with us.
-
The United Church understands economic issues as faith concerns because they go to the heart of ensuring a dignified life for all people, and of living with respect in creation.
-
The United Church and its partners work on issues related to food security, sustainable agriculture and fisheries, genetically modified food, and the equitable distribution of land.
-
The United Church has a long history of concern about gambling, is against its recent expansion, and urges members to avoid using funds generated by lotteries and casinos.
-
The United Church is committed to better understanding and challenging oppressive systems of globalization and empire. This includes issues related to trade and corporate social responsibility.
-
Most of the world's people live in poverty, including one in six Canadian children. Together with our partners, we work for a fairer distribution of wealth and affordable housing for all.
-
We work for an economy that will truly sustain life for all. This includes cancelling illegitimate and unpayable debts, renouncing our addiction to unlimited growth, and addressing ecological debt.
