As of Thursday, February 4, donations for the United Church's Haiti Appeal had risen to over $777,000! "God's abundant love for the people of Haiti is being richly expressed through the generosity of United Church members across Canada," said Omega Bula, Executive Minister of the Justice, Global and Ecumenical Relations Unit.
In addition to offering plate givings, United Church congregations have organized bazaars, educational events, bake sales, and other activities to raise funds to help rebuild the lives of Haitians who lost so much in the earthquake of January 12.
The United Church is currently channelling funds to its two partners in Haiti and through the ACT Alliance (Action by Churches Together). ACT members on the ground in Haiti have been working around the clock to gather the data needed to enable an effective aid intervention in Haiti that will include both aid for emergency purposes and aid for reconstruction. The United Church expects the Government of Canada to match dollar for dollar funds donated by United Church constituents.
