In mid-December some of the heaviest rains on record caused severe flooding in parts of southwestern New Brunswick. Many communities experienced extensive damage to roads, bridges, and houses, with Charlotte County the hardest hit, according to New Brunswick's Emergency Measures Organization. New Brunswick Premier David Alward called the flooding "beyond imagination." Many homes were covered up to their rooftops, vehicles were under water, and many people were displaced.
The United Church's General Council Office has been in touch with Maritime Conference staff with an offer of financial support for the Conference's emergency response initiatives. At present Conference is gathering information on needs and more discussion will follow.
Let us keep the people of New Brunswick in our thoughts and prayers as they work together to cope with a major natural disaster that has occurred at a most inopportune time of year.
