Dear Friends,

God works, at the beginning of the days as at the end,
for the mending of creation.
Mending the World: An Ecumenical Vision for Healing and Reconciliation

The United Church of Canada, 1997

This fall, KAIROS: Canadian Ecumenical Justice Initiatives is launching a new three-year campaign called Re-energize. The campaign calls us to begin working toward a world that is less dependent on fossil fuels like coal, oil, and gas and to contribute to building a just and sustainable energy economy. Fossil fuels are killing us—sometimes quickly through human rights abuses and conflicts over resources, and sometimes slowly through emissions that pollute the air, contribute to climate change, and degrade the ecosystems on which we all depend. I am inviting you, as part of the United Church, to participate.

Over the past few years, congregations and parts of the church have reflected on God’s love for all of creation and on our relation to it. The previous mission theme focused on right relationship with creation, and we have explored water as a sacred gift. How can our search for justice and healing for God’s creation expand our commitment to whole world ecumenism? How is this call part of challenging empire and revisioning our understanding of community?

To this end, I commend to you the KAIROS Re-energize campaign, which offers practical support for looking at ourselves, our churches, and our communities as well as advocating for a just and sustainable national energy policy. KAIROS has prepared resources for holding workshops, a Power Down Day, a 100-Mile Dinner, and worship materials. You are invited to lift up the Re-energize campaign on KAIROS Sunday, February 3, 2008, or at any other time during the year. The KAIROS Re-energize website * provides more information about the campaign.

Thank you for your ongoing commitment to the life and mission of the church. I extend to you greetings in Christ, who made known God’s absolute love, mercy, and justice and through whom we yearn for the transformation of the world.

Sincerely,
David Giuliano (The Right Rev.)
Moderator
