The United Church of Canada/L'Église Unie du CanadaThe United Church of Canada is profoundly saddened and outraged at the recent attack on the Oak Creek Sikh Gurdwara in Wisconsin. Our deep sympathy and prayers go out to the families and community of those whose loved ones died or were injured in this act of senseless violence.
We are disheartened that racially motivated violence continues to claim the lives of so many in our world. An attack on members of one faith community is an attack on the fundamental values of respect for human rights and dignity that are basic to building a just and compassionate society.
We call people in the United Church and all people of good will to renewed efforts to overcome the insecurity and fear of difference represented by this attack. Let us join together to create a world where all are accepted, diversity is a gift that enriches our lives, and we find ways to live in peace and partnership with one another.
