Major the Rev. Neil Parker, a United Church of Canada chaplain, was sent to Haiti with four hours’ notice on January 20 from his current posting as the Senior Chaplain at the Canadian military base in Petawawa, Ontario.
Neil was ordained in 1983 by British Colombia Conference, and served pastoral charges in Petitcodiac, New Brunswick, Summerland, British Colombia, and Burnaby, British Colombia. Since 1998 he has served as a military chaplain in Burnaby; Bosnia; Kingston, Ontario; Comox, British Colombia; and Petawawa.
In 2005 he completed his MA in Theology at Université St.-Paul in Ottawa. He is continuing his ethics research as part of a Doctor of Ministry project into the theological and ethical challenges facing chaplains in an increasingly diverse and complex ethical climate, especially focusing on issues such as that of armed humanitarian intervention and the Responsibility to Protect.
Neil has been married to Erin Parker since 1979; they are the parents of one son, John.
