Canadian Churches Call for Peace in Afghanistan
January 4, 2010
The Canadian Council of Churches, a coalition of 22 churches including The United Church of Canada, recently released “Canada's Role in Afghanistan,” an in-depth brief accompanied by a letter to Prime Minister Stephen Harper. They see the end of the Canadian military mission in 2011 as a new opportunity for diplomacy and peacebuilding, and are calling for
- diplomatic efforts to end the war
- support for Afghans in building up reconciliation programs at district and local levels
- leadership from the Canadian government to facilitate Afghan-led solutions to conflict over diverse issues
