Circle of Elders
Purpose
The Elders Circle is called into being in order to bring the wisdom of experience and rooted faith to bear on the life and mission of the congregation. The role of the Circle is advisory and consultative. It may influence the governance of the congregation, but does not take responsibility for it.
Tasks
- To gather at least three times per year to discuss the well-being and faithfulness of the congregation
- To deal with invitations to consider issues and decide whether to give advice or not
- To pray for the well-being of the congregation
- To keep a listening ear for currents, movements, and directions in the life of the congregation and in the larger community context
- To advise Council or the congregation if moved to do so
- To make a report to the congregation at least annually
Relationships
- The Elders Circle is nominated by the Nominating Committee and/or Council and appointed by the congregation at a congregational meeting. The congregation is invited to suggest names to the Nominating Committee.
- The Convenor of the Elders Circle communicates with the Council and/or congregation as requested by the Circle.
Elders' Qualifications
Members or adherents of varying age groups of the congregation who
- have demonstrated their commitment to the congregation's mission
- are deeply rooted in the faith
- demonstrate a vision for the congregation and church as a whole
Term
- initially half the group will serve for two years and half for three
- thereafter a three-year term, after which retiring elders become "honorary elders" not active in the Circle
