Wegesegum Seniors Camp Most Successful

September 12-15, 2005 saw 24 seniors (50+) at the camp to share in one of the few events ever held for seniors at a summer camp. At the conclusion an evaluation of the three days resulted in a full consensus of support for the continuation of the camp another year. In addition suggestions were offered of ideas that might be made as improvements in the light of this year's experience.

Halifax, Truro, Moncton, Saint John, and Fredericton areas were all represented and many were campers there in earlier days. The Mini Home converted for such use at the Canada Winter Games provided excellent heated facilities for up to 24 people, plus the cabins which were greatly improved a few years ago.

The Heritage Committee under the leadership of Yan Storr and Shirley Hunt developed the program with familiar camping experiences, including the usual vesper and campfire programs, singsongs, plus a variety of other activities.

The theme for the camp was "Aging Is a Gift-Unwrapping It," developed from a study guide entitled "Joys and Challenges of Aging." Rev. Vic Moriarty facilitated four sessions in which campers were able to discuss the issues and express their own views. Rev Gordon Delaney led the evening vespers, linking them to the theme and participating in the main sessions. Morning devotions at the breakfast table were arranged by Kaye MacVicar.

During the camp other programs of interest to seniors were offered, including The Importance of Good Nutrition, with Diana Richardson; Massage Therapy with Gaye Anne Sinclair, RMT; Palliative Care with Sharon Sinnott, RN; The Wisdom of Power of Attorney, and Health Care Directives with Sharon Lockwood, a lawyer from Chipman. Geraldine Reid taught an interesting craft and provided materials so that all might participate. Opportunities for swimming and canoeing were available as well as enjoying the outdoors, with the weather fully cooperating. The musical leadership of Queenie McKeigan greatly enriched the worship experiences along with other singing opportunities. Finally, the excellent meals and snacks provided by Beth and Harry Crouse were most appreciated.

Camp Wegesegum was transferred to the United Church and Atlantic Baptist when the Maritime Religious Education Council was discontinued in 1960-62. It has since been operated by a volunteer board of directors with the blessing of the denominations. Each denomination was well represented on the registration list and on the committee itself.
