Local Initiative Grants

Purpose

These grants are to help subsidize the cost of organizing and offering a continuing education event for a local region.

Across the country, a wide variety of innovative continuing education opportunities are being organized at local and regional levels. Often these events are held far from one of our education centres or theological schools, and they provide the chance for people in those regions to attend events that might otherwise seem out of reach because of distance or cost.

This grant program seeks to encourage the organizers of these events and to help make quality learning opportunities affordable in every region of Canada.

Who Can Apply

These grants are available to congregations, presbyteries, Conferences, and local consortiums of congregations or church-related bodies.

Preference is given to applications that

  • offer a learning opportunity to members of more than one pastoral charge, or offer the sort of learning opportunity that is beyond the scope or mandate of a single pastoral charge to present
  • demonstrate partial funding from other sources in addition to this granting fund
  • offer a learning opportunity that is not immediately available to people in their region from one of the United Church’s theological schools or education centres

Examples of Recent Grants

  • A coalition of churches in Sudbury Presbytery aims to host an annual weekend continuing education event with a guest speaker, workshops, and plenary sessions. The event is advertisedin Manitou Conference but will likely draw people who live close to Sudbury.
  • Niagara Presbytery hosts a lay school of theology every year that provides a series of courses directed at non-ministry personnel in the presbytery.
  • Women in ministry in Newfoundland Conference gather annually for a weekend retreat and an opportunity to explore shared issues and experiences.

Application Deadlines

Application deadlines are February 15, May 15, and October 15.

Applications that do not follow these guidelines will not be reviewed.
